Focus Groups and 1:1 Interviews for Families in the Early Start Program
The California Policy Center for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (CPCIDD) is a
non-partisan, non-profit policy center established to conduct research and identify best
practices that inform, support, and improve upon statewide policies that impact the lives
of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in California. CPCIDD is studying
the impact of the Early Intervention workforce shortage on families who have infants and
toddlers who are at risk for, or have, developmental delays. To gain a full perspective on the
issue we are conducting surveys, focus groups and one to one interviews with families,
family resource centers, early intervention service providers, and regional center service
coordinators.
Family experiences are essential to understanding how the early intervention workforce
shortage aJects access to services and supports for infants and toddlers with
developmental delays and disabilities. By sharing your family’s experiences, you can help
us better understand how workforce shortages impacts infants, toddlers, and families.
Each focus group will be approximately 60 minutes and responses will be de-identified,
unless express written consent is given to share identifiable information. The information
will be used to compile a report that will be published for statewide distribution. In
addition to focus groups we will be conducting 1:1 interviews with families who want to
participate but rather not be in a focus group. Information obtained in 1:1 interviews will
also be shared anonymously unless express written consent to share identifiable
information is given.
Your insights and experience will help inform policy discussions, workforce planning, and
system improvements across the state. Early Start families in California who have children
from birth to 5 years old are invited to take this short survey about the Early Intervention
workforce regardless of whether you are able to participate in a focus group or interview.
The survey will remain open until July 15, 2026.
