Camping, Social, and Recreational Services and Supports
We are excited to announce that social and recreational services for regional center participants have been restored.
Camping, social and recreational activities play an important role in the lives of all people, including children and adults with developmental disabilities. Social recreation can be linked to physical, social, and emotional well-being that translates into a healthy balanced lifestyle. Examples of social and recreational activities include sports, hobbies, leisure, education, clubs, fitness and culture and the arts.
These programs provide activities which are designed to teach specific skills – but also enhance socialization skills, develop friendships and provide learning and entertainment opportunities. These activities enable the development of social skills and personal relationships that foster a sense of community and provide enjoyment to daily life. Social and recreational services and supports creates opportunities for consumers and families to have integrated life experiences and promote community-oriented lifestyles.
The NLACRC offers a number of helpful resources to assist families in locating and accessing social and recreational opportunities. Families exploring social and recreational opportunities for those with disabilities should contact their Service Coordinator which connects families with children who have special needs with resources and support in the community.
